The final showdown-Sourav Ganguly

KOLKATA: Much before Sourav Ganguly announced his retirement on Tuesday in Bangalore, he had spoken to the powers-that-be in the BCCI. According to our sources, Sourav informed the BCCI of his desire to sign off his international career after the two-Test series against the Englishmen, against whom he had made a memorable debut way back in 1996.

He got a sympathetic hearing and some assurances, paving the way for his 'return' to the Team India fold. The assurances, however, came with a couple of riders.

First, he would get only the series against Australia. Secondly, it would be up to the new selectors to judge his performance in the first two Tests before he is given an extension till the end of the series. (PTI Photo)
